YMCA Kid City (est. 2008)

A fun filled, interactive learning experience within the Fremont Festival of the Arts on August 1 and 2 where kids and their families can play together while being engaged in a variety of activities focusing on citizenship development and healthy lifestyles. Children will have the opportunity to become citizens of Kid City by visiting various sites and completing specific learning tasks and games.

The Mayor and City Council of Kid City (all 5th grade contest winners) are planned to open Kid City with a ribbon cutting on Saturday at 10:00am. The event features family entertainment on stage throughout the day, which includes games, prizes and chances to win one of two custom built backyard playhouses donated by local builders.

Visitors can learn how to make wise money choices at the Kid City Bank, the importance of literacy at the Kid City Library, how to stay healthy at the Kid City health center, and about the importance of taking care of our environment at the Kid City central park. Activities also include mural painting , campfire singing, pinewood derby car racing, basketball and running relays, and more. A storyteller, face painter and other Kid City “officials” also will participate to create a lively and fun event for young citizen visitors and their families. We can’t wait to see you at YMCA Kid City!

Kid City is managed by the Fremont/Newark YMCA.

About the Fremont/Newark YMCA
The Fremont/Newark YMCA opened its doors in 1972, dedicated to serving the tri-city communities of Fremont, Newark and Union City. Then, we offered primarily childcare and youth programs. In 2004, as the growing need for healthy lifestyles became more apparent, we expanded our health and fitness programming by opening a 2,400 square-foot fitness facility.

Goals and Plans
The Fremont/Newark YMCA envisions becoming a leader in the Tri-City area in creating positive change in the areas of healthy and active lifestyles, advocating for healthy children and families, and championing central themes of community wellness, literacy, cultural diversity, and youth service leadership training.

Some of our major goals are to:

  • Increase health and wellness membership by 30-35%
  • Expand service offerings in childcare and day camping in Newark and Union City
  • Achieve strategic capital improvements and facility renovations
  • Expand afterschool programming to include Harvey Green Elementary school
  • Enhance teen leadership and civic engagement programming

Proceeds from the playhouses will benefit YMCA childcare, day camp, sports and fitness programs for youth and families who could not otherwise afford to participate.

YMCA Kid City Mayor and Council Elected!

3 fifth grade students from Maloney Elementary School have been elected to serve as YMCA Kid City Mayor and City Council. “These students were elected by providing a winning essay as part of a writing assignment for Mrs. Snowden’s class.” Said David Hembree, executive director for the Fremont/Newark YMCA.

The winners will receive a complimentary week of YMCA Summer Day Camp, and participate in the upcoming Fourth of July Parade as well as preside over opening ceremonies at YMCA Kid City at the Fremont Festival of the Arts August 1st and 2nd, 2009.

The YMCA Kid City Mayor for the coming year is Miss Cynthia Chang, City Council members are Miss Sawsen Chaida – Vice Mayor and Mr. Moxit Shah City Council member.

The assignment was to write a business letter to address how the student would promote cultural harmony, build a strong community and nurture healthier lifestyles if they were the Mayor of Fremont.

“All of the entries were wonderfully insightful” said Hembree. “The winners were chosen for their unique perspective and emphasis on leadership, diversity, and creativity.”

YMCA Kid City is part of the Fremont Festival of the Arts, in partnership with the festival hosts; the Fremont Chamber of Commerce. Kid City is a family friendly feature of the Festival of the Arts where children can have fun with hands on activities and enjoy themselves in a place just for kids.

The Fremont/Newark YMCA offers many programs for children and families including Summer Day Camp, licensed child care, Health and Wellness for Adults, and leadership development for teens with programs such as Youth & Government.
